Restaurants in St Martin/ St Marteen

By Kerry Biddle on 22nd March, 2024

An integral part of travel is experiencing different cuisines and trying things that are not common at home. St. Maarten/St. Martin has such a diverse cosmopolitan population that the choice of where or what to eat can be quite overwhelming. There is a simple solution to that, try something that can’t easily be made at home or that is unfamiliar. Anyone can make a burger, but a handmade kobe beef burger with truffles is something else entirely.

NOLA Bayou Bistro

If you’re a foodie that frequently travels to St. Maarten, you surely know of Jimbo. Not just a great fun-loving character with an infectious laugh, but also a pioneer in the local restaurant industry since 1989. As of 2023, Jimbo brings us a new and  unique culinary experience with NOLA Bayou Bistro.

Picture an exquisite menu that captures the flavors of Louisiana Bayou cuisine, while sitting in spectacular décor designed by Julian Lennon that defines “first-class fine dining experience”. There isn’t a bad seat whether inside or out. Everyone has a panoramic view of the water and sailboats at dock while enjoying a sumptuous meal or sipping on a cocktail and trying to decide between the rather adventurous alligator or the spicy Louisiana mumbo gumbo…or perhaps the jumbo Gulf BBQ shrimp? So many choices.

NOLA Bayou Bistro Sint Maarten

“NOLA” stands for New Orleans, Louisiana and the menu features the rich, spicy joys of Cajun/Creole cuisine. Instead of bread they serve the best corn muffins or buttermilk biscuits you’ve ever tasted. And let’s not forget their authentic jambalaya, Creole catfish, southern fried chicken or lobster etouffée. NOLA Bayou Bistro should be one of the first places you visit when you arrive so that you can go back again and again.

The newly opened NOLA has a vegan Creole court bouillon. A blended combination of tofu, walnuts, carrots, bell peppers and tahini baked to a golden perfection. Served over white rice with asparagus and yellow squash.

Location: Plaza Del Largo, Airport Blvd, Simpson Bay, Sint Maarten

Emilio’s

The International cuisine with Caribbean flare includes quite a few vegetarian dishes that are absolutely divine. In fact, there is something for everyone. Fish so fresh that if it were any fresher, it would still be in the sea. Succulent grilled meats that rest in their own delicious juices, tender pan-seared duck breast with truffle mashed potatoes and even enticing wild rack of venison with molasses stewed vegetables and butter polenta. The desserts are as intriguing and any one of them could be the perfect end to an exquisite meal. Ask about the apple crisp and guava bread pudding beforehand, because they are available in limited quantities.

Emilio’s Sint Maarten

Emilio’s is one of those places that you will want to return to over and over to experience their whole menu and become good friends with Norman, Su, Chef Sydney and the rest of their friendly and highly competent staff. Try Emilio’s for something unusual. Grilled watermelon salad with arugula and feta; pumpkin ravioli with sage butter sauce; vegetarian red coconut curry; or crispy goat cheese with beetroot salsa and microgreens. For Sunday Brunch they offer a wide selection of vegetarian options.
