The aftermath of Hurricane Irma on the Turks and Caicos Islands
By Hannah Barnard on 13th September, 2017
Turks and Caicos resident and editor of discover Turks and Caicos Magazine, Mary Lou VanderHeide, reports from Providenciales on the devastation of Hurricane Irma and the aftermath.
“The Turks and Caicos Islands suffered a direct hit when Hurricane Irma came barreling through on September 7. Communication is still difficult in the island and power is out to most of the islands. The government stated that South Caicos, Grand Turk and Providenciales suffered the most damage. We have not yet had an update on Salt Cay.”

“Power has been miraculously restored to the Grace Bay area and stores are starting to reopen. There are also a handful of restaurants slowly opening up as well. We have no official date of when resorts will reopen but we have heard that most intend to reopen by American Thanksgiving. Turks and Caicos will definitely bounce back and be open for an amazing 2018 vacation season!”
