Hooiberg

Things to do in Aruba Hooiberg

The Hooiberg (Dutch: haystack) is a volcanic formation at the center of the island. It is Aruba’s second highest point reaching about 540′ high. For a great workout, the climb up is 587 steps, affording a full 360-degree view. On the way up, climbers encounter desert brush, cacti, divi-divi trees, lizards and maybe some roaming goats. The refinery is to the east; the high-rise hotel strip is to the west. From the south, planes can be seen taking off and landing at the airport, and on a clear day, you might even see Venezuela. On the north is a panorama of rugged coastline. Bring water, binoculars, a hat and a camera, and wear sturdy hiking shoes.
